Images can make a huge impact on your site’s loading speed. While there are many ways to optimize images for the web, it is always a better idea to use well-coded image optimization plugins. In this article, we will show you some of the best image lossless compression plugins for WordPress.
What is Lossless Image Compression?
Lossless image compression is an image compression method that reduces file size while retaining the original data and quality.
Lossless compression is used when it is important that the original and the decompressed data be identical, or where deviations from the original data would be unfavorable.
The main difference between lossy and lossless image compression is that lossy image compression allows you to reduce the file size even more by sacrificing some of the quality. This means that lossy compressed images are not as good as their originals. On the other hand, with lossless compression, you do not lose any quality, but your images may not be as small in file size as lossy compressed images.
Why Use Image Lossless Compression Plugins for WordPress?
WordPress automatically compresses JPEG images when you upload them to your site. However, you will need an additional plugin if you want to compress PNG, GIF, or SVG files.
1. WP Smush
Smush is the most popular WordPress image compression plugin. It can compress and optimize JPEG, PNG, and Gif images as well as convert your images to the best format for you. You can bulk smush up to 50 attachments at a time so that you don’t have to optimize images one by one. Smush is also great if you’re on the WPMU DEV hosting platform because it works with their global CDN.
Smush has a premium version that gives you access to additional features like Super Smush (reduce image size up to 2x more than lossless compression), lazy loading, converting PNGs to JPEGs, WebP support, automatic resizing, and more. The premium version starts at $49 per month for up to 500k media items.
2. EWWW Image Optimizer
You’ll find that the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin is incredibly easy to use. After you install it and activate it, the plugin will automatically start optimizing your images as you upload them.
The plugin optimizes your images by converting them to a new file format. When you upload an image to WordPress, it’s usually in a format like JPG or PNG. The EWWW Image Optimizer plugin can convert your images from JPG/PNG to WebP, which allows for smaller file sizes without losing quality.
EWWW Image Optimizer isn’t the only plugin that does this, but it’s one of the easiest and simplest options available – and I find it works better than other plugins with larger images.
Being a blogger who has a keen interest in speed optimization, I am always looking for ways to trim down my site’s load time. TinyPNG is one such service that helps me in this regard.
TinyPNG or TinyJPG is a free online tool that can help you compress your images drastically without sacrificing quality. This is done by applying lossy compression techniques to the image.
I have been using this plugin for over 6 months and have been extremely pleased with its results and have recommended it to several of my friends as well.
By using this plugin on your website, you will be able to save 50-80% of your website’s bandwidth. This means you can expect your images to load faster than before and give your visitors a better experience while browsing through your website/blog.
Optimole is a new service that attempts to solve this problem by automatically optimizing images that are uploaded to WordPress websites.
Optimole will automatically optimize all images on your site and serve them from their global CDN.
The plugin also has an option to enable lazy loading, which means images will only be loaded when they come into view in the browser, speeding up your site even further.
Optimole is available in both free and premium versions, with the free version allowing you to compress up to 1GB of images per month.
Imagify is a free WordPress plugin that can help you speed up your WordPress site. If you want to optimize the images on your WordPress site, then this plugin is for you.
What I like about this plugin is how easy it is to use. After installing and activating the plugin, all you must do is go to Settings > Imagify. From there, you can set the optimization level – Normal, Aggressive, or Ultra. You can also choose an automatic optimization level, which will compress all images that are larger than the specified size.
Once you have made your selection, you simply click the “Bulk Optimize” button. The plugin will then bulk optimize all your images as well as any future uploads. The first bulk optimization may take a while, but future bulk optimizations should only take a few seconds to complete.
We believe one of the best ways to speed up your website is through image compression. By doing it with a plugin, you eliminate the need to tinker around with the code of your site and risk breaking it. The plugins below are designed to save you time and add functionality on top of speeding up your site, letting you work the way you want.
